Detonation Flame Arrestors For Vapor Recovery
Dow Chemical and ENARDO worked to develop a solution to protect the Dow plant from high pressure flame propagation in its piping system. The detonation flame arrestor application encompassed several stringent requirements, including the difficulties of large pipe size, high flow capacity and the extreme volatility and explosive parameters of Group B gases. ENARDO is one of the few manufacturers in the world that offers detonation flame arrestors for Group B gases and the large size unit exceeded the size of tested products available. A short lead time for the product was also necessary to meet the plant expansion schedule. ENARDO worked with the designer of its patented detonation flame arrestor to incorporate advanced materials from the aerospace industry to customize for this unique application. A flame arrestor prototype was designed, constructed and tested to validate the explosion and flow capacities at the Chem-Mech Engineering Testing Facility. Dow approved the testing results and ordered two units. ENARDO expedited the detonation flame arrestor materials and labor to meet the tight deadline. The detonation arrestors for the Dow Chemical installation contained 36" diameter advanced technology elements with 16" piping connections, and included pressure drop flame detection and a steam nozzle port. ENARDO and Dow are pleased to introduce what is potentially the world's largest Group B gas detonation flame arrestor at the Dow Chemical Plant in Houston.
